The Heart of the Georgia Sound: A History of the GMIA
In the music business, there is a fundamental truth: It all starts with the song. In 1978, a visionary group of songwriters and publishers recognized that while Atlanta was brimming with talent, it lacked a unified sanctuary for the craft. They formed the Atlanta Songwriter’s Association (ASA)—a collaborative hub designed to transform raw creative energy into professional excellence.
A Legacy of Excellence
From its inception, the association was steered by the architects of the “Georgia Sound.” Our founding directors included luminaries from the Lowery Music Group, Harry Warner of BMI/Nashville, and David Leonard of Writeside Studios. These pioneers understood that networking and mentorship were the lifeblood of a sustainable career.
As the industry evolved, so did we. To better represent the full spectrum of our state’s musical output, the ASA became the Georgia Music Industry Association (GMIA). Today, we stand as the oldest music association in the state, continuing the mission our founders began nearly half a century ago.
Our Three Pillars: Education, Exposure, and Experience
The GMIA serves as a bridge between the bedroom studio and the global stage. We believe that professional success is a result of high-level preparation. We fulfill this through three primary objectives:
- Education: Providing members-at-large with access to credible, professional-grade information that cuts through the noise of the modern digital landscape.
- Exposure: Creating a platform where talent is seen and heard by the right people, at the right time.
- Experience: Through educational panels, seminars, and live showcases, we offer a “proving ground” for artists to refine their professional acumen.
A Global Network with Local Roots
Our leadership remains our greatest asset. The GMIA Board of Directors is comprised of award-winning songwriters, elite managers, and active performers who are currently shaping the industry. This is bolstered by our Advisory Board—a “who’s who” of international music professionals who provide our members with an global perspective and world-class expertise.
As a Georgia not-for-profit corporation, the GMIA is not just an association; it is a community utility. We remain dedicated to those who strive for excellence, ensuring that the next great chapter of Georgia’s musical history is written by our members.
